Dr. Alma Morel (she/her/hers)
Professional Background and Educational Philosophy
I am entering my second year at Lyndhurst, and it truly has been a wonderful experience getting to know the community and the educators, all of whom have welcomed me and supported me during my first year in the district.
As a young child, my mother and grandmother stressed the importance of education. I honored their memories by earning a B.S. in Biology, an M.Ed. in Educational Leadership, and a Ph.D. in Teacher Education and Teacher Development. I am entering my 24th year in education. I am fortunate to have varied experiences that have provided me with different perspectives from the classroom level, school level, district level, and state level. I draw from these experiences in my decision-making by considering how it may impact individuals at those various levels. I began my career as a high school biology teacher, a middle school assistant principal, a Director of Curriculum, and prior to coming to the Lyndhurst School District, I was the Passaic County Education Specialist with the NJ Department of Education.
Throughout my career, I have been a student advocate, and passionately worked towards ensuring that ALL students’ needs were met. I have held myself and other educators accountable to ensure that appropriate supports were made available, and provided to students so that they achieve academically, and more importantly have the skills they need to lead productive lives.
I have been married for 20 years, and my husband and I have been blessed to raise three children (and a fourth child, our cockapoo dog Sugar, she is a sweetheart). My son and daughter both attend college, and my youngest daughter is in high school. I am an active member in my community (HS PTO, Hispanic Heritage Month Committee, Hawthorne Women's Softball League). I am also a board member. I thoroughly enjoy my time as a board member as I give back to the families and children of my community. The experience also provides me with another unique perspective that helps me in my current role as Assistant Superintendent.
During the spring, I love to play softball. Throughout the year, you can find me on a sideline of a soccer field cheering my youngest daughter and her teammates on the pitch. To unwind, my husband and I like to watch shows. Right now, we are excitedly watching House of the Dragon, we were big Game of Thrones fans. I am also secretly addicted to the game Candy Crush. On Sundays, we have our weekly dinner with our extended family, where we enjoy each other's company and play a variety of games. I am Puerto Rican and I am fluent in Spanish.
