BIOLOGY HONORS - CLASS SCHEDULE & HOMEWORK 


WEEK 30 (4/20/20 - 4/24/20) - DISTANCE/ONLINE LEARNING

Just prior to Spring Break, PowerPoints and other resource materials (videos, readings, etc.) for Unit 7: Cell Cycle, Growth, and Division were posted in Google Classroom as well as the first two assignments for Unit 7 (and for marking period 4). Assignments were posted at the start of the spring break, incase any students were interested in completing the work early and to help spread out the workload from other classes. 

This week students should make sure they look through all the unit 7 materials (including the readings and videos) and then complete the U7 Assignment #1 - Do Now: Identifying Stages of the Cell Cycle (Google Slide template) and U7 Assignment #2 - Cell Cycle, Growth, & Division Questions (Google Form). Assignments #1 and #2 are due this Thursday, April 23rd by 5:00 pm. 


WEEKS 28 & 29 (3/30/20 - 4/09/20) - DISTANCE/ONLINE LEARNING

Although the marking period technically ended Friday (3/27), I will be extending the Quarterly Assessment to be due Wednesday (4/1) to give every one time to look over their work on Monday, ask questions, and prepare. As stated before, the Quarterly Assessment is a modified version of the U6 DNA, RNA, & Protein Synthesis Test and the planning page of the DNA & RNA Modeling Project (which was originally going to be your Quarterly Assessment before we knew that we would be out of the building for an extended period of time). The Quarterly Assessment is posted in two parts: The first part is multiple choice questions (in a Google Form) and the second part is free response based off the protein synthesis practice worksheet. The second part of the quarterly is posted as a Google Slide, so if you don't already have Google Slides downloaded to your iPad from self service you should do so.

This week will be focused on the MP3 Quarterly Assessment as well as tying up any loose ends from Marking Period 3 and finalizing grades. Throughout the week, I will be posting to the class and reaching out to some individual students about make-up work, corrections, etc. so make sure you check for messages through email and Google Classroom. We will not start MP4 or our next unit (U7) on the Cell Cycle until next week.


WEEKS 26 & 27 (3/16/20 - 3/27/20) - DISTANCE/ONLINE LEARNING

Please review the PowerPoint slides and other materials uploaded to the "U6 DNA, RNA, & PROTEIN SYNTHESIS PPTS & READINGS" and the "U6 DNA, RNA, & PROTEIN SYNTHESIS SUPPLEMENTAL VIDEOS" postings in Google Classroom. I posted a number of videos that you can watch to help you understand the structure of DNA and RNA and the processes of protein synthesis (transcription and translation). You do not have to watch every single video, as some of the videos overlap in information, but I encourage you to watch at least one about each topic and suggest you watch the animations showing transcription and translation.

Three assignments are posted in Google Classroom that will be due by 3:00 pm on Friday 3/20/20.  A fourth assignment will be posted on Friday 3/20/20 and due on Tuesday 3/24/20. These assignments will be turned in through each Google Classroom posting by either uploading images of the completed paper copies or editing and uploading the electronic pdf version.

HOMEWORK:  No formal, written homework. Read over Virtual Lab: Population Biology and How to Write a Formal Lab Report handouts. Make sure you have your charged iPad with you on Wednesday. Start studying for Friday's Test.

What you should know for the test:

  • Be familiar with the steps of the scientific method and what is done during the different steps.
  • Identify the manipulated, responding, and controlled variable in an experiment.
  • Define hypothesis.
  • Why is a theory more valid than a hypothesis?
  • Write a hypothesis as an “if-then” statement.
  • What is the difference between mass and weight?
  • What are the SI units of length, mass, & (liquid) volume?
  • Write numbers in scientific notation.
  • Multiple & divide numbers in scientific notation.
  • Use the “stair-step” method to convert metric units.
  • Use “picket-fence” (dimensional analysis) to convert between metric & English units.
    • ​​​​​​There will be question(s) where you need to use two conversion factors (like the last question in the math packet).
  • *During the test, make sure you always show your work and include units.
